Preparing to Speak
- I am not a seasoned public speaker. It makes me nervous. I have long had a fear of it. But I am learning to enjoy it. It all comes down to preparation.
- DON’T WAIT UNTIL THE LAST MINUTE (or at least the VERY LAST minute)
- Pick a topic you have talked about before and are passionate about.
- Break it down into a pain, a story and a solution.
- Create an outline first and slides second.
- Ask the audience questions. Get them involved.
- Plan everything but also plan for spontaneity
- Limit the text on each slide. Use slides as a guide to keep you on track, not as the entire content.
     - SOMEONE SHOULD NOT BE ABLE TO LOOK AT THE SLIDES AND NO EXACTLY WHAT YOU SPOKE ABOUT!
- Do something fun, entertaining or unexpected.
- Write and re-write. Practice by yourself and for someone else. And edit again. Time it.

On SMMW 15
- So awesome.
- Everyone going to be there.
- This time I’m going to have friends with me — RECOMMENDED for shy, antisocial types!
- Go to stuff, but don’t feel like you need to go to everything!
- BE SOCIAL!
- Have a plan!
- Planning on quick “Pubcast” style interviews.
- No real expectations, except that I expect to enjoy myself!

On Vacations, Relaxing and LETTING GO
- I’m going to get as much work done as I can before leaving
- I’m going to do as little work as I can when I’m there
- Seeing the sights with my family
- Not going to be cooped up in a room
- I will do less. Something will slip. And it will be OKAY.
- It’s also why I have a team. My business will not implode.
- If you don’t have a team now, work towards having one — or work towards having some sort of backup plan when you’re away — so you can enjoy it!

On how you must be motivated by more than money
- Baseball season
- Every decision I make is with this time of year in mind (partnerships, public speaking, traveling, commitments)
- You must decide what motivates you. Envision what you desire and envision the motivation — the big way — and allow it to guide you.
- This weekend, my boys’ baseball seasons officially get under way. And our lives are about to get crazy.
- I work from home because of this time of year.
- I started my own business because of this time of year.
- I rarely travel because of this time of year.
- I have created a scalable business that requires less of my time, less maintenance, less production because of this time of the year.

On creating an environment that is perfect for production
- I have a cluttered desk.
- I share an office with my family.
- The office has a glass door and sits immediately outside the entryway to the house from the garage.
- New office is downstairs, away from everyone.
- New office will combine video studio, audio studio and writing/production.
- New office will have one big, empty white wall for recording, carpet for sound absorption.
- New office will have a standing desk, beanbag chair and treadmill.
- New office will be DECLUTTERED and have only what I need to be productive.

- It doesn’t mean designing a new room. But create a space for production, free of distractions.

Here's an overview of this episode...

My Journey
  • I don’t have any regrets
  • I could have done things differently, but I didn’t — part of the journey
  • Looking back, I wish I was more willing to invest early
  • Looking back, I’m glad that I read A LOT to research what I needed to do, but you can put too much stock in the opinions of others. TRUST YOUR GUT!
  • Looking back, I wish I would have started an email list immediately, found my right niche immediately and did a lot of these things.
  • I didn’t, and that’s okay!

1) Determine an Initial Niche (this can change!)
  • Focus on a group that spends money
  • Focus on an area of expertise
  • Focus on an area where you could write a TON of content

2) Invest in a Home Base
  • Website
  • Logo
  • Photos
  • Hosting
  • DON’T SKIMP

3) Create a TON of written content
  • Write a list of questions you get from customers or potential customers
  • Take your own tour of the inner workings of your product, service, or topic that appeals to your audience — Create a list of every feature and the questions that likely come up
  • These questions are your blog posts
  • Determine a frequency that you can maintain and commit to
  • Share across Facebook, Twitter, etc.

4) Create How-To Videos
  • 1-3 minutes
  • Extension of the written content. HELP people interested in your related industry.
  • Upload to YouTube.
  • Upload to Facebook.

5) Create a Lead Magnet and Build an Email List
  • Pick an email list software (MailChimp, AWeber, Infusionsoft, etc.)
  • Create a guide, ebook, checklist, webinar or something of value that you can offer in exchange for it
  • Use OptinMonster, Pippity, etc. to push the opt-in to visitors

6) Facebook ads
  • Invest whatever makes sense in the early going. Prepare to grow. At least $1/day, but more if possible.
  • Create a Facebook page
  • Target website visitors and email subscribers (low amount early) to like your page, drive traffic and opt-in
  • Create lookalike audiences to do the same
  • Target interests and split test vs. lookalikes
  • Over time, your website visitors, email list and fans will grow. You will then move more of your budget to those groups.

Dan Jost, who edits my Pubcasts, insisted on the "Return of the Mack" title -- a 90s R&B reference. I figured... why not??

Here's what was covered...

Review of 2014:
  • AMAZING!
  • Insane growth.
  • Email list from 10k to 50k.
  • Consistent revenue growth.
  • Building a team — now have “backup CEO” John Robinson
  • Wrote less — averaged once per week vs. 3-5/week
  • Still set traffic records
  • Personally — Baseball was awesome!
  • Just really fun building this thing. No experience doing it.

Resolutions:
  • No more winging it!
  • Refine a daily and weekly routine for work, health and play.
  • Better structure and processes for campaigns and customer service.
  • Get back to consistent blogging — thinking about 1-3 posts per week.
  • New branding and website design.
  • LOTS OF FACEBOOK VIDEO!
  • Get the Pubcast going again, but more structure. SCHEDULE GUESTS.
  • Develop an application or other software product.
  • Develop a new community product for companies looking for advertising consultants.
  • Experiment with things I haven’t done before and that make me feel uncomfortable (more public speaking, masterminds)

Resolutions (Personal):
  • Keep a clean desk.
  • Don’t overwork.
  • Read one book per month.
  • Run a half marathon.
  • Win another state championship!
  • Better organize time with my wife and kids.
  • Put away the device!

Important Tools I Use:

  • Infusionsoft
  • ZenDesk
  • DriftRock Flow
  • Power Editor
  • AdEspresso
  • Evernote
  • Photoshop
  • GoToWebinar
  • Basecamp
  • Screenflow
  • Google Analytics

This episode was broken down into the following sections:

  • Growing Pains of Business Growth
  • Price Changes: Setting Your Price of Your Products and Services
  • Responding to Your Audience: Working Through Questions and When to Respond.

Some Things to Consider...

Business growth comes with change including pricing of your products and services. As you look to set your pricing, stop, make a list and ask yourself the following:

  • How much time does it take you to create, manage, etc.?
  • What is your time worth to you? Be honest and fair to yourself.
  • What is the market for a similar product or service?
  • How many do you expect to sell?
  • How many do you need to sell at certain price to be worth your while?
  • Who is your target market? Keep in mind your audience may change over time.
  • How much will customers pay?
As you grow, inquiries increase. Weeding out the trolls.
  • Is the question about your product or service?
  • Do people pay for the information that is being requested for free?
  • Is the question reasonable?
  • Do you need help to respond to the reasonable questions?

  • Going Niche
  • Relationship Between Delegating and Business Growth

Some Things to Consider...

Finding your niche. Let's Do It! Make a list:

  • What are you good at?
  • What are you passionate about
  • What is your target audience about? What do they need help with?
  • Where is the opportunity?
  • What niche requires an investment?

Moving on...keep your list going

  • Keep in mind: what are you good at, passionate about, your target audience, your opportunity, and your investment
  • Zero in on 3 niche topics ( aka passion)
  • Assemble a list of 3 questions and 3 problems
  • Assemble a list as long as you can with all the questions that you may be asked
  • Which list is longer? Which do YOU like best?
  • Who will make a financial commitment?

Pop a bottle! Here's this week's show notes:

2 Year Retrospective

* Beginning to Now

* First post: Why I started my Facebook Page.

* Virtually no engagement the first month.

* First year-plus, experienced some solid growth.

* It wasn’t until this year — Beginning in July — when my business truly took off on Facebook.

* Lesson: 1) Don’t Quit. 2) Build an audience through providing value. 3) Sell is final step, not first. 4) INVEST — time and money for positive ROI

Debate: Facebook is a waste of money

* Forrester report

* An open letter to Mark Zuckerberg

* Survey of 395 marketers

* Satisfaction average score of 3.54 out of 5.0 -> Last. First was on-site ratings and reviews with 3.84.

* 16% Reach Complainers. Ugh.

* Jamie Turner: 60SecondMarketer: The Truth About Facebook Ads: They Don’t Actually Work

* More than 1Million advertisers. High number of newbies

* Many have it all wrong. How many are building trust and a community? How many just sell?

* Don’t approach Facebook like banner advertising

* Equivalent of passing out fliers or cold calling

* How many are using Custom Audiences, Lookalike Audiences, Power Editor, Conversion Tracking?

Pull up a barstool! On this week’s episode of the Pubcast, Jon sits down for a very special interview with JJ Loomer, CEO of JJ Loomer Wizibido, discussing how he went from no job to owning a business and having clients the next day. Pop a juice box!

Also on this episode, Jon discusses his 4 steps on Growth and Contests:

The Challenge: Grow to 20,000 Likes

Step 1: Know Your Value Proposition

Fans are users. Users are people. People aren't robots. People lead to business. Fans are numbers.

Why should someone like your page? What is interesting about you? What is unique? What value do you provide?

What can you share on a daily basis to make a person's (not FAN's) life better?

Craft branding, imagery, tagline, content and strategy around THIS, not a goal for a number.

IF YOU DON'T DO THIS FIRST, YOU CAN ONLY BUILD A NUMBER, NOT A BUSINESS

Step 2: Execute that Value Proposition

Regularly and consistently publish valuable, self-less, helpful content. The purpose of the majority of posts should be to educate or entertain.

Build organically.

Step 3: Attract with Ads

Offer something of value that appeals to your target audience in exchange for a like.

Micro targeting

Step 4: Contests?

My special guest this week is YOU! Welcome to the virtual pub, where you and I get drunk on social media. I sipped on a Sam Adams Porch Rocker this week while I discussed the following topics...

The Life of an Entrepreneur and Life/Work Balance

The nice thing about recording by myself this week is that it gave me an opportunity to give you some insight into some of the things I'm dealing with. I don't have it all figured out, and I go through many of the struggles you do.

My life has been incredibly busy lately, and a big reason for that is baseball. I'm a huge baseball fan, and my three boys are all now playing. I coached my two oldest boys this year, and it was definitely the most fulfilling season I've had.

This busy baseball season came at the expense of business. I simply didn't have time to take on another client, start an online program or redesign my site. You pick and choose what is worthwhile, right?

That said, I am working on the redesign of my site. I'll continue to use Genesis Framework, but I am moving to a mobile responsive theme (more on that soon!).

I'm also working on a new online training program. I've been working on and delaying this for months, but I'm hoping to finally go public soon. I'll be opening for pre-pays shortly, giving early arrivals a big discount. Stay tuned!

If you haven't noticed, I'm making my One-on-One Coaching Sessions a higher priority for my business. This has been a hugely successful program, both for my clients and for my business. Simply go to JonLoomer.com to reserve a session. You'll have 45 minutes to get one-on-one time with me to talk about whatever your issues are with Facebook or content marketing.

Just for listening to today's show, you get a discount. Listen for the promo code!

Facebook Hashtags

The big news is that Facebook has launched hashtags. So, what are they? How should you use them? And what are the problems with hashtags? I discuss these things in great detail.

Tools I Use

People often ask me about what tools I use or recommend that make my Facebook marketing easier. I wrote a post on this, but here are the main ones and a short description:

ShortStack: What I've used for a year and a half to build all of my Facebook tabs. Love this tool!

AgoraPulse: Can be used for creating tabs, community management and a whole lot more. I use it for data analysis.

PerfectAudience: One of the tools I use to create FBX -- Facebook retargeted ads. This is the future of Facebook marketing. Use this link to get a free $70 trial -- this covers the ads themselves, too!

AdRoll: Another service that I use to create FBX ads. Use this link to get a free $60 trial that covers everything including the ads.

PropelAd: Helps you understand which posts you should promote based on interaction. I also use this to get alerts when posts are doing especially well.

PostPlanner: This tool has been a lifesaver for me regarding bulk scheduling Facebook posts. But also great for many problems associated with Facebook community management and content development.

Sit back and enjoy. CHEERS!

In this week's Pubcast, I drink at the virtual bar by myself. But there's still plenty of fun stuff to talk about, including...

Social Media Marketing World

I had an amazing time in San Diego at this event sponsored by Social Media Examiner. Virtually everyone was there, and I had an awesome time. I share what I learned and how this event was inspiration for me to make changes to the Pubcast -- as well as what other changes may be coming.

Update to Promoted Posts

Many are reporting that Facebook has removed the ability to target Fans only with Promoted Posts. Is this a big deal? I break it down.

David Foster of Hubze pulled up a seat at the virtual bar this week to cover a wide array of topics. We talked so much that I ended up having to edit out 20 minutes of this conversation. What is left is podcasting gold!

Blake Jamieson pulled up a seat at the virtual bar on this week's Social Media Pubcast and we had an absolute blast. Blake's main claim to fame is taking the Pool Supply World Facebook Page from nothing to more than 75,000 engaged Fans in a very short period of time. Blake shares his secrets of success.

We also talk about Graph Search. I find it hilarious that neither of us have it yet, but Blake's mom does. Blake's mom actually comes up a couple of times in this chat!

Blake and I also take a nice, deep dive into the discussion of metrics; namely Facebook Reach and understanding the metrics that matter for your particular goal. Of course we talk about the reporting bug and our annoyance over that topic as well as sift through the data regarding which types of content are best for generating website traffic -- second guessing what many of us have been doing for quite a while.
